Frequently Asked Questions

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between a rectangle's width and height, expressed as W:H. A 1920×1080 display has a 16:9 ratio because 1920/1080 simplifies to 16/9. It defines the "shape" of a rectangle regardless of its actual size.
16:9 is the dominant ratio for modern monitors, televisions, YouTube videos, and most digital displays. 4:3 was the standard for older CRT monitors and televisions. 9:16 (vertical 16:9) is used for mobile video and Instagram Stories. 1:1 is used for square social media posts.
Multiply or divide both dimensions by the same factor. If the ratio is 16:9 and you want a width of 1280px, divide 1280 by 16 to get 80, then multiply by 9: 80 × 9 = 720px height. The Proportional Scaling section above does this automatically.
